Abner from Barn Burning
I had recently read Barn Burning in our recent pod and I was observing a certain character in particular. His name was Abner Snopes. We all know that most men with families show love and compassion towards their families, but Abner was more forceful and harsh towards them. He would often yell orders at them and treat them like dirt. Another fact about the character I had stumbled upon was that he had a criminal like nature. In the war, he would often steal Confederate's horses and then one day he was caught and shot in the leg. In general, the character is a really negative one. He is jealous and violent. When I read short stories or stories in general, I hardly find any characters that I disliked even if they were the bad characters. But after reading Barn Burning and seeing how Abner is, there is one character that I had highly disliked.

I agree that I didn't like this character as well, but as my experience with the general public, I don't see this as much of an exception. Unfortunately there are still those in our society that will use people and businesses to their benefit without any care of the ramifications as a whole.
ReplyDeleteIn this particular case, Abner couldn't separate his actions toward others and his family. He obviously felt that the world for him alone and everyone else was there to do things for him without expectations. It is a miracle that one of his children was able to see the error of this thinking and chose to leave the situation.
